Projektvezető (TMIT):

Originally the TeleCalm project was an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) project developed in the Healthcare Technologies Knowledge Centre at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME-EMT). The crux of the project is originated from a simple folk observation – the chimney story; many years ago people used the chimney as the indicator for the activities of elderly family members living on their own. The presence of smoke coming out of the chimney meant that their elderly started their daily routine; however, if no smoke could be seen they knew that they should check on their relatives. This simple idea was used along with the possibilities coming with the newest telecommunication devices to create a novel intelligent home environment which keeps track of the people who live inside their home. The result of this effort was the TeleCalm project which uses

  • sensor network to collect the various parameters which describe the activities and health status of the people;
  • tablets or smartphones equipped with Android OS to present the result of observations for the relatives;
  • a relational database to store the measurement results, decide on the health status, and exposes web services to provide access to the data.

A key feature of the solution – which distinguishes it from other caring products – is that not the alerting events are the most important information to look at, but the fact that everything is alright. Therefore, the proposed system provides feedback even when there is no problem with the status of the relatives. This way one can reassure him or herself that the absence of feedback is not caused by a dead battery or misconfiguration of the sensors.

The main objective of the project is to bring together experts from different V4 countries and Taiwan and incorporate their know-hows and expertise in such a telecare system. In this way the overall system gets more accurate information about the users, thus enabling more precise prediction results. Different partners in different countries have separate solution for sensorics and intelligent systems. The present project gives good opportunity to integrate them into one system, giving researchers a good way to share their experiences and start a fruitful cooperation with the help of this proposed project. Different project partners have different solutions. By connecting and combining these together it gives rise to an effective system at
the end. The future work regarding the project can be summarized in the following key points.

Conceptional issues

  • IVF-NSC cooperation in the field of sensorics (WSN), sensor data compression, local area networks, system design and implementation.
  • Mobility exchange of young researchers, cooperation research work.
  • Technology transfer on the bilateral work of the participating V4 partner institutes and NCTU and via dissemination activities for broader community.

Technological issues

  • Extend the range of hardware devices/sensors with additional ZigBee based sensors; humidity, opto, accelerometer, etc., extending the precision of the different decisions by sensor data fusion technologies.
  • Integrated secure transport protocols to be used when uploading and querying the measurement results.
  • Improve/extend the observer component (Android client application).
  • Make the client widget available in more mobile platforms.
  • Deal with the privacy issues arising with the use of sensors in the intelligent home environments.
  • Dissemination of the results (papers, demos, webpages, news, etc.)
